Technical Service

Technical Services for EU type approval of passenger cars according to Guideline 2007/46/EC and Directive (EU) 2018/858

Bosch Engineering's Technical Service is an independent Technical Service designated by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt – KBA) under the umbrella of Bosch Engineering GmbH according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and 17020:2012 for vehicles, systems, components and individual technical units.

On your behalf, we carry out the necessary measurements for EU type approval in the area of powertrain systems for passenger cars and commercial vehicles (LDV, MDV, HDV) as well as off-highway applications and two-/three-wheelers.
Our service portfolio comprises measurements in the following areas: emissions and on board diagnostics (OBD), fuel consumption, engine power, exhaust emission opacity for diesel vehicles and noise emissions – either at our own state-of-the-art test facilities or at your location.

We support you throughout the entire certification process: beginning with the initial assessment by the KBA, through carrying out all relevant measurements as well as production of the test reports, to obtaining the certificate from the authority. As part of our self-imposed compliance requirements, we do not perform measurements on products from the Bosch Group under our own responsibility but make our laboratory facilities available for this and support the measurement process with our expertise in collaboration with the responsible Technical Service. In addition, at our customers’ request, we carry out the legally required inspections for the Conformity of Production (CoP) measurements after SOP (start of production) within the scope of the KBA’s tendering model.

Our individual services are:

Conducting measurements for engine power certification according to:

  • VO (EG) 715/2007
  • UN/ECE-R85, -R24, -R120

When conducting measurements for power certification, the engine is inspected from the minimum to the maximum speed (rpm), according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The manufacturer’s advised rated engine power as well as the engine operating point with the largest torque is approached.

  • Measuring the engine power of combustion motors to power motor vehicles
  • Measuring the effective power and the highest "30 minute performance" of electrical drive systems
  • Determination of the motor's power curve on the dynamometer

Conducting measurements for emission and OBD certification according to:

  • VO (EG) 715/2007
  • VO (EG) 595/2009 (einschl. VO (EU) 582/2011)
  • VO (EU) 134/2014 (Anhänge II – VIII, X)
  • VO (EU) 2015/96 (Anhänge I und II)
  • VO (EU) 2016/1628 (in Verbindung mit VO (EU) 2017/654)
  • UN/ECE-R83, -R24, -R40, -R49, -R96

We measure the pollutant emissions from the engine and check the vehicle’s OBD system.

Emission measurement:

  • Type I: Emissions after a cold start (23°C) according to NEFZ/WLTP
  • Type II: CO emissions in idle mode
  • Type III: Emissions from the crankcase
  • Type IV: Evaporative emissions
  • Type V: Durability
  • Type VI: Emissions at low temperatures (-7°C) after a cold start
  • Ambient Temperature Correction Test (ATCT, 14°C)
  • Emissions data definition for in-use tests
  • Real Driving Emissions (RDE) with a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS)

Testing the OBD system:

  • In order to individually test diagnostic capability, errors are inserted in various systems and components of the vehicle.
  • The test has been passed when the diagnostics functions to be tested recognize and display all errors before the end of the test cycle, with the emissions being below the legally defined limit.

Conducting measurements for CO2 emissions and fuel consumption certification according to:

  • VO (EG) 715/2007
  • VO (EG) 595/2009 (einschl. VO (EU) 582/2011)
  • VO (EU) 134/2014 Anh. VII, Anlage I
  • VO (EU) 2016/1628 in Verbindung mit VO (EU) 2017/654
  • UN/ECE-R49, -R96, -R101, -R120

Here the CO2 emissions and fuel consumption and/or electric energy consumption are measured, as well as the electric range of passenger cars which are driven by a pure combustion engine, a pure electric motor or with hybrid technology.

Conducting measurements for diesel smoke certification according to:

  • VO (EG) 715/2007
  • UN/ECE-R24

We test your vehicle directly on the roller dynamometer for approval of engines with self-ignition (diesel engines) regarding the emissions of visible, air-polluting substances.

Conducting measurements for noise emission certification according to:

  • VO (EU) 540/2014
  • 70/157/EWG
  • UN/ECE-R41, -R51, -R138
  • VO (EU) 134/2014 (Anhang IX)

Whether conventional combustion engines, hybrids or electric vehicles, we offer you a variety of tests in the field of noise emissions (Pass-by-noise) at our DIN ISO 10844: 20147 certified test facilities in Boxberg:

Further information regarding the designation of a Technical Service are available on the KBA website

An overview of the entire scope of all named test areas and key figures can be found in the appendix of our designation document on the right for download.
